Ireland – Electric car sales surge in the first three months of 2023

Sales of electric cars in Ireland are rapidly increasing.

The Central Statistics Office has released data showing a significant increase in the usage of electric vehicles among motorists compared to the same period last year.

Between the first three months of 2022 and 2023, the number of new electric cars licensed rose by 39%, from 5,388 to 7,513.





According to the CSO, the number of petrol cars licensed in the first three months of 2023 was 16,292, which is a 48% increase from the 10,981 registered in the same period of 2022.

The number of diesel cars licensed decreased by 5% in the same period of time.

The latest CSO figures reveal a massive 33% increase in the number of new cars registered in March 2023, with 15,782 new cars licensed compared to 11,872 during the same month last year.

In March 2023, the total number of used private cars licensed was 5,529, which is 16% higher than 3,902 in March 2022.

Toyota topped the list of most popular private car licensees, followed by Skoda, Volkswagen, Kia and Dacia.

The Central Statistics Office reported that the five car makers comprised 48% of all new private cars licensed last month.
