Tesla announced they are building a new Megafactory in Shanghai to produce their Megapack battery system.

At a signing ceremony of the project in Shanghai, Tesla said that the new plant was scheduled to break ground in the third quarter of the year and start production in the second quarter of 2024.

The new factory will initially produce an estimated 10,000 Megapack units every year. This is the equivalent of around 40 GWh of energy storage. The products will be sold worldwide.

This information comes after an announcement was made with Tom Zhu, SVP of Tesla's automotive business, Wang Hao, general manager of Tesla China, and Tao Lin, VP of Tesla attending the signing event.

Last year, reports said that Tesla planned to expand one of its most productive automaking plants, the Gigafactory Shanghai, to add an annual capacity of 450,000 units.
