Firefighters on strike in Carlow and Kilkenny

Local firefighters are on strike in Carlow and Kilkenny.

Overnight, retained firefighters began their statewide strike campaign.

They will no longer assist with any work starting today, excluding emergency calls.

However, if a solution cannot be found, rolling strikes beginning on June 13 and an all-out strike beginning on June 20 are planned.

Stewart Philip Byrne from Kilkenny's SIPTU County Shop explains:

“We started industrial action at midnight last night. We will be attending all calls this week for the first week. Everything we’re doing is internal, so we’re not cooperating with training, that’s our industrial action.”
